Ref: Oil Pump replacement 2.7 TDV6 Engines
We have recently been made aware of some information concerning 2.7 TDV6 engine failures. The oil pump casing/housing is not sufficiently strong to withstand the stresses of tensioning the cam belt.
The cam belt tensioner is bolted to the oil pump casing. When the oil pump casing fails, it breaks at the timing belt tensioner mount, this causes the timing belt to be dislodged such that the valve timing is disrupted. As a result, the pistons and valve collide, destroying the engines valve train and causing excessive engine damage.
The pictures above show how the oil pump has been strengthened around the mounting on the new version of the pump.
We have yet to find any Technical Bulletins from Jaguar Land Rover which confirm why the mounting was strengthened or any information about the problem.
There are now many horror stories on the internet which relate to the timing belt tensioner breaking away and causing excessive damage most of which seem to affect 2007-2008 model years. Try typing “2.7 TDV6 oil pump failure” into Google
As a company we have fitted many of these Timing Belts and Tensioners over the years without any issues but are now concerned about this new information.
We have now seen the damage caused first hand by the failure in our workshop and feel it's our duty to inform you of this new information.
We highly recommend the oil pump is changed if your engine has the original type pump.
From the 1st April 2019 onwards our company will not replace a 2.7 TDV6 Timing Belt without fitting a new updated engine oil pump.
